By now, you might have heard of how important Omega-3 fatty acids are for your health. We love to tout their benefits because our seafood meals are replete with Omega-3 sources, and we don’t sacrifice great taste to obtain them.
Let’s take a moment to better understand the magic of Omega-3.
The Magic of Omega-3
There are two types of fatty acids you’ll hear about most: Omega-3 and Omega-6. The former is the healthy kind, whereas the latter is less beneficial for the human body.
Alas, Omega-6, which we don’t digest terribly well, is pretty common in the Standard American Diet (SAD). These are most common in foods like grains and several different cooking oils (particularly the hydrogenated/manufactured kind; not organic). Most of the packaged foods in the grocery store feature some degree of Omega-6.
Then there’s Omega-3, which is abundant in cold water seafood like salmon and tuna. It has several distinct health advantages:
- It’s high in good cholesterol, AKA high-density lipoproteins (HDLs).
- It doesn’t raise bad cholesterol levels from low-density lipoproteins (LDLs).
- Omega-3 can reduce triglyceride levels by as much as 30%. Don’t forget that we generally want higher HDLs, and lower LDLs and triglycerides.
- It can also help with blood flow. So, if you struggle with blood clots, seafood is a terrific way to address the problem.
- In the same vein, you can also reduce blood pressure with Omega-3.
- It’s a great tool for reducing inflammation.
- Omega-3 also helps boost your energy levels and build muscle.
We’ve only scratched the surface with the positive aspects of Omega-3 fatty acids. Now, if only there was a place to get Omega-3s when you want to go out to eat . . .
