Many Americans worry about gaining weight and eating poorly after indulging in Thanksgiving and Christmas festivities. It’s a legitimate problem for several folks this time of year.
You do not, however, have to worry about demolishing your dietary goals this holiday season if you mix in a little Island Fin Poké here and there. We have a few pointers and suggestions to ease your mind over holiday weight-gain blues.
Make Sure Your Dietary Game plan is Holiday Proof
This is especially important if you suffer from serious conditions like diabetes. You’ll need to develop a way to enjoy holiday foods without triggering a blood-sugar spike from sweet potatoes, apple pie, or the like. Depending on your state of affairs, this may mean total abstinence from sweets, or you may have to set boundaries and limitations.
CAVEAT: Even if you don’t intend to eat sugary, salty, or other problematic foods, those items will be around you at holiday meals. Therefore, you’ll have to be ready to endure the psychological temptation to consume unhealthy foods (often with tantalizing aromas) all around you.
Beware the Buffet-Style Meals
Your family or friends may arrange their holiday meals like buffets, so make sure you’re prepared for that, too. It’s way easier to overeat in these scenarios. Focus on eating slowly, don’t linger at the buffet table too long (otherwise, you’ll experience temptations), and also be mindful of open bars. Too much food and/or alcohol can derail your health program and leave you feeling bloated, lethargic, and sick
Stay Physically Fit & Get Adequate Sleep
Don’t neglect the fitness and rest components either. It’s easy to become more sedentary during the holidays because it’s colder outside, and we tend to adopt a hibernation mentality. Get enough rest (usually about seven/eight hours each night), but don’t overdo it.
