What is Soft Serve?

Soft serve is almost like ice cream, but not quite. The machine that produces it adds a small amount of air to it right before the freezing process. This gives it a softer texture, which means you don’t have to worry about jabbing into it with a spoon because it doesn’t harden the way regular ice cream does.

There are multiple groups, and individuals who claim to have invented soft serve, including Dairy Queen. It came about in the 1930s, although some argue that former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was on the team that invented it in the 1940s. Others believe it actually started right here in the Chicago area in nearby Moline, Illinois.
